BHP continues to fund and support She Codes, by partnering with us to deliver four Plus programs since 2019. One of our latest Plus Program held in 2021, was made up of 20 Brisbane women, 10 from the broader community and 10 BHP employees as part of their career development plan. Three of these women were offered positions within the BHP Digital Factory on the conclusion of the program. She Codes had the opportunity to discuss how the Program has helped them thrive in their current roles at BHP.
As our first corporate partnership to launch She Codes Plus (previously Web Girls Plus!) in 2019, we’ve been proud to work alongside BHP in both Perth and Brisbane to provide more pathways and opportunities for women to enter the technology industry.
In 2021, our Brisbane Plus program upskilled ten women from BHP and ten from the broader community. Now, post program, six women have been recruited into the BHP Digital Factory team in Brisbane and share their experiences with us below.
Georgie, 2021 Brisbane Plus Program graduate, joined the She Codes community with the intention to change her career pathway from engineering into data science. She shares, “This opportunity with She Codes gave me the confidence to pursue changing my career.”
On the completion of the Plus Program in Brisbane, Georgie joined BHP as a Digital Factories Specialist, as part of BHP’s FTAP (Female Talent Acquisition Program); where she is being well supported to continue her development as a data scientist. As a Specialist Data Science, Georgie is a part of a team identifying and delivering performance improvement projects through the application of cutting-edge analytics. Her key role is supporting the Digital Factory with projects that fundamentally change BHP’s performance across safety, productivity and people. Georgie mentions, “The most valuable part of this journey has been the connections that I made with the other like-minded and motivated females – many of whom I am still in contact with!”
Brooke, also from the 2021 cohort, transitioned into a role as an Agile Delivery Principal in the Digital Factory team. Rounding out the cohort is Bruna who is a Digital Factories Specialist, working as a full-stack developer and says she “couldn’t be happier” with her onboarding into the team.
Our graduates securing roles like these within our program partner organisations is one of our favourite parts of running the six month program. Not only do we get to directly invest in the skills and tech talent of our cohort, but we get to watch their journey continue in an organisation that we know stands behind us, and our mission.
