Our one week taster program, Flash, is aimed at teaching women across Perth the basics of the key emerging fields in tech. Led by Hayley van Waas, our lead mentor in Plus, this program focuses on Python fundamentals, web development, algorithms and data, as well as offering participants a glimpse into hardware.
Running full time over five days, last week we were joined by 15 women all ready to explore and expand their tech knowledge. Including women of all backgrounds, Hayley was able to lead the cohort through their learning, helping them to grow and upskill in the tech industry.
“Most of the class had never programmed before but everyone was fully engaged with the material,” Hayley tells us about the recent cohort. “It was inspiring to see a class of women from entirely different fields so eager to learn about tech. There were a lot of new concepts thrown at them, and it was certainly overwhelming at times, but every single student exceeded my expectations.”
She continued, “They asked great questions, helped each other out, and showed genuine curiosity for what we were doing. Many even had their own project that they wanted to build using their newfound knowledge and by the end of the week, they were already penciling in time to get started! I can’t wait to catch up with them all at future SheCodes events and on our social channels to see how they are going!”
Thanks to the support of the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation and Spacecubed, this program was completely free and full of fun learning opportunities.
Keep an eye out for future Flash cohorts, where you can be involved in this exciting week of opportunities.
