Over 150 individuals filled the Town Hall last night to launch the second iteration of She Codes Plus, a collaboration between She Codes, BHP, New Industries WA, and Spacecubed, delivering our fully sponsored, six-month program for women to pursue tech careers.
Bringing together women from all walks of life, the launch night is so much more than just the opening of applications, it’s a celebration of how far we’ve come, and where we’re headed. With 2019 She Codes Plus alumni amongst the crowd, attendees were able to have their questions answered by the 25 women who have completed the course.
“This initiative has truly created a space for women to be welcomed into the tech industry, and I’m more than pleased to announce that 40% of the women who were part of the 2019 pilot program have now secured new roles within tech,” founder Kate Kirwin shares.
With a combination of in-person and virtual mentoring, She Codes Plus provides successful participants with the essentials required to pursue careers in technology-focused roles. Conducted on a part-time basis, participants undertake four unique projects focussed on building web applications using the HTML/CSS, Python, Django and React.
“In response to feedback from across industries and our workshop participants, She Codes Plus addresses a lack of comprehensive hands-on training programs and upskilling opportunities.” Kate continued.
With a panel featuring She Codes alumni, Nina Karisik, Ellie Salimi, Roxanne Barney, and Sarah Levins, they were able to not only inspire the crowd to follow their own dreams but share first-hand what being involved in the program was like.
Applications are now open, and we welcome women of any age, background or industry to apply. This iteration of the program has places for 15 members of the community and 10 BHP staff (including employees and contractors).
Applications close at midnight on the 2nd March and submissions will be reviewed by an independent panel.
