She Codes Plus expands opportunities to meet participant demand Australia wide

For the last 7 years She Codes has been offering free programs and workshops, with an Impact First mindset enabling women from diverse backgrounds to access educational opportunities.

We launched Plus in 2019 with the mission of connecting women to jobs, accelerating the pathway from beginner to industry and since then, we have been overwhelmed with applications for the program, with applicant demand over 10 times the number of places available. Our community constantly asks for paid options to join the program, so they can secure their place and take advantage of the learning opportunities and outcomes we’ve been able to deliver so far.

So, for the first time since we launched, we are expanding the available options and scholarships for participants to join, and get involved in our programs.

Perth

For the upcoming Perth Plus program, kicking off in September, we have 18 FULLY FUNDED scholarships available for women of colour, first nations women, women with disabilities, neurodiverse women and women who are unemployed or underemployed and returning to work.

We will also have 2 FULLY FUNDED scholarships provided by our mentors as part of the Mentor Giveback Program. A massive shout out to Macklin, James, Marc, Ben, Cat, Cristi and Brownyn for reinvesting their mentor fees to this program, and providing funding for these places. These Mentor Giveback Scholarships will be awarded to women from the community who display passion and drive to enter technical roles, and who have a keen interest in paying it forward and being a role model to future developers.

In addition to these 20 fully funded places we have 5 Partial Scholarships available at a cost to the participant of $3,000. The value of the Plus program is estimated at $10,000 with similar programs costing upwards of $20,000 per head. So this discounted, partial scholarship, allows us to still support women, while also opening up more placement opportunities in the cohort. To qualify for a Partial Scholarship, applicants must still apply and show passion, drive, willingness to enter the tech industry, diversity and being a positive role model, and will be assessed by our panel of judges.

Brisbane
Don’t worry Brisbane, we haven’t forgotten about you! Stay tuned, as we will be announcing information regarding the next Brisbane Plus program very soon. Make sure to sign up to our newsletter to get notified and be the first to know when we launch applications.

So, what does this mean for other She Codes events?

Our one day workshops, hosted Australia wide, will continue to be free for participants, now and into the future. This entry-level event is the perfect tech taster, and gives individuals the chance to explore if tech is right for them. It also brings our community together, and allows us to more broadly demystify the stereotypes around tech.

She Codes Plus, will continue to expand the offering types, as we aim to impact more women, year on year. If you have any feedback on our Scholarship or Payment models – please get in touch with us.

From 2023, we are also excited to announce a new offering – the Pay it Forward Program. This will allow alumni to pay it forward and pre-pay the tuition of the next person to come through the program. This offering will be available Australia wide, as we continue to run our six month program in Perth, Brisbane and Sydney – and hopefully continue our expansion into Melbourne and Adelaide.

The Pay it Forward Program allows our alumni and mentoring community to connect more deeply with future cohorts and allow those who received a free education to pass on that same opportunity to another woman.

Here’s to the future!

We thank you, our community, alumni, program participants, partners, and supporters, for your continued support as we double down on our impact in the tech industry across Australia. Did you know, when we started this mission, only 26% of tech jobs in Australia were held by women, and now, we see that number increase yearly. So, here’s to you – and here’s to the future.
