Auto & General Partners with She Codes for their Brisbane Plus Program

Auto & General has partnered with She Codes Australia on their Brisbane She Codes Plus program for 2022. The Brisbane Plus program has recently concluded, with the final Showcase taking place in September.

Auto & General’s overall mission as a company is to be Australia’s best insurer by providing affordable, comprehensive and dependable insurance solutions to all Australians. They are also extremely aware of the lack of diversity in tech and are passionate about wanting to make a difference, which is one of the reasons they decided to partner with She Codes.

Recently, She Codes Founder, Kate Kirwin, sat down with the Chief Information Officer at Auto & General, Angela Ryan. In the interview, Angela discussed what Auto & General are currently working towards, the culture within the workplace, why they partnered with She Codes, and the abundance of technical roles currently available in the company. The Brisbane program was another bumper year with more than 60 applications for places in the program. The final cohort was made up of 5 women from within Auto & General and 18 from the broader community. In addition to providing the scholarships, A&G have followed the journey with the cohort, through mentoring at classes, an Immersion afternoon, Masterclass Day and Showcase evening.

A highlight for us was the Immersion Day which took place on the 24th of August. The cohort began the day by touring the Auto & General office in Brisbane. Here, the cohort asked questions about company culture and values within the company, the mentoring and professional development provided to developers, and what upcoming projects they were most excited about.

Following this panel discussion, lighting talks took place that covered topics like a day in the life of a new developer, how Auto & General are committed to providing ongoing career development, and the backend code behind some of their projects. To conclude Immersion Day, the cohort and Auto & General team engaged in a networking evening, where the cohort got to connect with and get to know the Auto & General employees better while enjoying food and drinks.

Wrapping up the program – the Brisbane Showcase evening took place on the 20th of September, where supporters and attendees could come, view the participants’ portfolios, network with other professionals in tech, and hire some amazing women from the program.

Showcase was a great opportunity for the cohort to present the portfolio they have produced throughout the program, and celebrate their achievements. Thank you to Angela Ryan and Shawn Wallace from Auto & General for presenting a speech and helping present the certificates to the graduating cohort.

This is just the beginning for our Brisbane cohort – we are so proud of everything they have achieved over the last 6 months, and are excited to see where their careers lead them. Our cohort have stated that 97% of them would recommend this program to others and 100% will continue using at least 1 newfound skill – a fantastic outcome for the program!
